Item The role of business incubators in the informal and semi-formal financing of micro, small and medium enterprises: The case of incubated enterprises in Tanzania(Mzumbe University, 2018) Kibona, DeogratiasThere is a consensus in literature that high economic growth rates contribute to economic and social development. At the same time, it is argued that the countries economic growth rate is mainly determined by among other factors, their ability to trade and invest. The success in trade and investment is determined by the role of two major players; governments and enterprises. While a government makes policies, enterprises trade and invest. The enterprise sector includes the micro, small, medium, large enterprises and even multinational companies. However, Micro, small and medium sized enterprises (MSMEs) account for the largest portion of sector. MSMEs promote new ideas and accelerate the effective use of resources, they also contribute to the growth of gross domestic product of a country. This is mainly due to their involvement in production activities, job creation and payment of taxes. For the changing economic environment, MSMEs are flexible and have a great ability of adjusting themselves to fit the new environment due to the fact that their decision making process is simple and fast. Their ability to quickly adapt to changes ensures the resilience of the economy in time of crises. MSMEs also contribute to diversification of the economy through generation of technical innovations. This big contribution to the economic development creates interest of researching in the MSMEs sector. This research has focused on assessing the role of business incubators on incubated MSMEs’access to informal and semi-formal finance in Tanzania. The investigation is made to understand whether business incubators play a financial intermediation role between enterprises and if incubatee and incubator manager’s social capital has a significant influence on the process.Item Assessment of the factors affecting perfomance of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs): a case of Kilimanjaro Region(Mzumbe University, 2013) Lema, John P.This study attempted to assess the factors that are affecting performance of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Kilimanjaro region in Tanzania. The aim of this study is to provide the knowledge to the people in the region on how they should start and manage their SMEs by being aware with the factors affecting performance of SMEs which in turn will help them to manage their business sustainably. The factors tested were: Demographic characteristics (age, sex, and education level of SMEs owners and managers); Business characteristics (age of SMEs); Capital structure (source of initial capital, and capital size); Legal structure (means of operating SMEs); the Marketing strategy used by the enterprise to increase sales revenue and the enterprise management. The study was conducted in Moshi urban, Moshi Rural, Hai, Siha, Same and Mwanga towns in Kilimanjaro region. The study used the cross sectional study design in which data of 200 SMEs owners, and managers from all Moshi urban, Moshi Rural, Hai, Siha, Same and Mwanga towns was collected only once. Both descriptive and empirical methods were applied during the study. The regression results shown that, the most significant factors affecting the performance of SMEs determined by income in the study area were: Demographic characteristics (age and education level of SMEs owners and managers), Business characteristics (age of SMEs), Capital structure (source of initial capital, and capital size), and the Marketing strategy. Sex and Legal structure (enterprise management) did not significantly contributed to the SMEs performance in this study. There is a need for policy makers to make sure that education is given to the SMEs owners, managers and the employees together, with supporting them, if possible there is a need of having curriculum in primary and secondary schools by making business and entrepreneurship subjects as compulsory subjects, this will help to equip learners with appropriate business and entrepreneurial knowledge and skills which will encourage them to start and manage business successful. There is also, a need for the government to make sure that, businessmen and women are enabled to have access to loans (credits) with reasonable conditions from banks and other financial intermediaries for expanding their businesses; also soft loans should be provided to those who want to start new businesses. There is also, a need to put more emphasis on how to encourage women to engage in SMEs business and lastly there is a need to make sure that education on saving behavior is encouraged among the people in the study area, this is because in this research most of the businessmen/women started their businesses from personal savings as their source of initial capital.Item Examination of SMES’ influence on the creation of employment opportunities in Tanzania: A case of Tanga(Mzumbe University, 2017) Sangiwa, Paulo EllyThis study examined SMEs influence on creation of employment opportunities. Data of the study were collected from 215 respondents using structured questionnaire. Both qualitative and quantitative methods for data analysis were used. The study revealed that, improvement in market infrastructures, networking and communication; timely business promotion and advertisement; availability of credit facilities; effective application of one‟s technical skills, competence and experience in managing businesses; availability and application of technology does support business operation thus provide a room for creation of employment opportunities. Likewise, the firms‟ management capacity to identify, establish and implement workable business strategies; provision of adequate business capital; motivated and committed to business purposes and goals; and adherence to business governing rules and regulation are the crucial aspects that were affirmed to support firms/business operations. Based on the econometric analysis results, the study revealed, firm location, firms‟ years in business operation, market availability for goods/services offered, effective firm strategies, accessibility of the financial services, technological application in the operationalization of business, and demand for goods and/or services have the significant influence to creation of employment opportunities. In the period of 4 to 18 years of firms operation, findings revealed a number of employment opportunities created ranges to three employment chances (20.93 percent), two employment chances (44.65 percent), and one employment chance (26.98 percent). Likewise, these chances inclined to the following employment categories; permanent, family, apprentice and temporary. The study recommend that strategies towards creation of employment opportunities should focus on improving provision of financial services; market infrastructures, networking and communication facilities; promoting application of appropriate technical skills, expertise and experience; application of technology in business operation; and provision of reliable and adequate electricity and water supply services. All in all however, a similar study should be undertaken in other areas to ascertain the extent of applicability of the findings of this study.
