    Basics of project planning and analysis: Project identification, formulation and appraisal

    Preface. Project planning and Analysis is a book that focuses on the methodology or approach of planning and analyzing a project from the perspectives of the owners or funders of the project. The core philosophical base for this book comes from my conviction that, in this country and many other developing countries, university students (under/postgraduates) find it difficult to access the most new and up-to-date reading resources not only in this field but also in other fields as well. Although this book is not a complete substitute for recommended text books for the course, still it is a standalone reading and reference material in the sense that it is a concise and comprehensive account of what any student undertaking this course is supposed to learn. Again the book has been authored in a style that is user friendly even for field workers/practitioners (i.e. the book can be used both as a reference material for students and as a planning guide for practitioners). In order to achieve this goal I have used many diagrams, Boxes, examples and solved self-test questions so as to be able to clearly communicate difficult concepts; and areas covered in this book follow a 'simple to complex' approach in terms of their discussion. The approach I prefer most in my teaching.

    This book is based upon my experiences as a student in economics (project planning and management), development practitioner, consultant and lecturer. Project planning is taught as a supportive subject in several ways in many academic disciplines such as economics, agriculture, community development, education, industrial production and marketing, entrepreneurship, health, transportation etc. The core philosophical base for this book comes from my conviction that, although these disciplines vary in content, their broad approach to project planning and analysis is similar. This book therefore is addressed to these academic and professional disciplines. It involves brainstorming, planning, scheduling, budgeting, communicating, and organizing. A well and carefully planned project has got higher chances of successful completion. This book is one of the tools that one will find very valuable; it will help in reaching the decision as to whether one should implement a certain project and not the other. This book is designed specifically for students who are newcomers to the subject, and who may have a psychological barrier with regard to the subject, to practitioners who are not seasoned experts in this field. Therefore, this book provides the users with a clear and accessible introduction to the practice of project planning and analysis techniques including the preparation of basic project statements. The Author focuses on the key issues which need to be identified and resolved in the appraisal process, and which will help the potential appraiser to develop the skills he or she needs.

    Project planning and management: A text of principles and practice with a case

    The pace of development in developing countries including Tanzania requires the availability of enough and well trained officers and managers in the field of project planning and project management. This is a challenge to most of the training institutions in these countries to be able to cope with this pressing need for qualified project personnel and to produce the required textbooks and teaching materials relevant to their own countries' economies and project environments, as well as closing the gap which created by lack of foreign exchange to import text books for use in training. This books is meant to meet the above needs and is an outcome of the authors' long experiences in training project planning and management in both long courses and short courses at the Institute of Development Management (IDM) Mzumbe, Morogoro, Tanzania. This book is expected to be of great use to the undergraduate and graduate students in this subject in 'institutions of higher learning and to the vast number of economic planners, engineers, agronomists etc. who are involved in different project works as practitioners in government ministries, Departments, banks, cooperatives and parastatal organizations at different levels. This book will also prove of great use to many academicians in institutions of higher learning. Given the varied and wide range of potential users of this backed the with authors’ case have covered thoroughly the following areas studies: - Pre-Investment planning of projects and their management planning. - Investment stage planning of projects and management. - Post-Investment Planning, Organization of the Projects.
