dc.description.abstract | The study investigated the contribution of pension funds on poverty relief: a case of National Social Security Fund (NSSF). The study assessed the NSSF portfolio profitability trend 2008/09 – 2012/13, investigate the Old age benefits contributes to poverty relief within the community, analyze the Social security funds leads to sustainable development and to investigate the challenges facing social security funds in Tanzania. The study involved (61.1%) Males and (38.9%) Females. Data collection methods were interview questions. The study revealed that NSSF is working under profitability line. NSSF has no loans because of the profit which the fund has. This implies that the fund is able to pay beneficiaries of the fund without any problem. The findings as well noted that older age are those aged 60 years and above. It was revealed that relief of poverty is not just about giving financial assistance to people who lack money; poverty is a more complex issue that is dependent upon the social and economic circumstances in which it arises. The findings revealed that social security fund leads to sustainable development. The findings revealed that pensions contribute to poverty relief which then brings sustainable development to the individual livelihood. Different challenges were noted such as the biggest challenge facing the scheme includes the different formulas they use in computing their member’s benefits although the contribution rate is the same. They also lack indexation, complaints from public regarding pension formula and HIV/AIDS pandemic, low benefit levels, long lead times to process claims and poor services. This might be due to mismanagement of reserves, high administration costs, and poor administrative performance led to poor investment management. The study concluded that NSSF is a nation fund which is stable and is able to pay its beneficiaries without any problem. The study recommended that Social Security Regulatory Authority should establish the issue of pension formula. | en_US |
